Conference on Legal Risks and Countermeasures of International Investment and Trade — From the Perspective of China-Africa Cooperation

In order to improve the legal environment of China-Africa investment and trade, from September 17th to 24th, China Law Society hosted Conference on Legal Risks and Countermeasures of International Investment and Trade — From the Perspective of China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing and Shanghai. The conference in Beijing commenced on September 17th. Executive Vice-President of China Law Society Chen Jiping and President of Ethiopian Lawyers’ Association Wonde G. Selassie gave speeches on behalf of relevant parties. Vice-President of China Law Society Zhang Mingqi chaired the opening ceremony. Over 120 participants from the legal and business circles of China and 10 African countries attended the conference in Beijing.

At the end of the conference in Beijing, representatives of Chinese enterprises adopted Social Responsibility Declaration by Chinese Enterprises in Africa. This is the first social responsibility declaration made by Chinese enterprises. This is the indication of the sense of mission and social responsibility of Chinese enterprises to serve local society and pursue harmonious, inclusive and sustainable development during the process of economic globalization.

The conference in Beijing collected over 30 papers. Participants carried out in-depth discussions on topics such as “contract protection and default risk prevention and control of China-Africa investment and trade”, “laws, policies and risk prevention and control of infrastructure investment”, “alternative disputes settlement mechanism of China-Africa investment and trade”, “laws, policies and practices of foreign-related commerce and trade zones” and “Study on industry norms and social responsibility of international enterprises”. Many valuable advices and suggestions were proposed in the conference.
 

 
The conference in Shanghai is the second session of the Conference on Legal Risks and Countermeasures of International Investment and Trade — From the Perspective of China-Africa Cooperation after the conference in Beijing, which was jointly hosted by China Law Society and Shanghai Jiaotong University and held in Shanghai Jiaotong University Koguan Law School on September 23rd. Over 200 participants attended the conference including those from the legal circle of China and 10 African countries and teachers and students from Shanghai Jiaotong University Koguan Law School. Vice-President of China Law Society Zhang Mingqi, Deputy Director-General of the Standing Committee of Shanghai People’s Congress, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiaotong University Jiang Sixian, President of Shanghai Law Society, Chief Procurator of Shanghai People’s procuratorate Chen Xu and President of Tanganyika Law Society Charles Rwechungura gave speeches on behalf of relevant parties. Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiaotong University Koguan Law School Wang Houji chaired the opening ceremony.
 
 

 
After the opening ceremony of the conference, conference guests including Zhang Mingqi, Jiang Sixian, Chen Xu, Wang Houji, Charles Rwechungura inaugurated the Research Center of African Law and Social Development.
 
 
At the conference in Shanghai, experts and scholars from China and Africa carried out in-depth discussions on topics such as “China-Africa international relations and legal education”, “international investment and legal risk prevention”, “China-Africa investment and international dispute settlement” and “China-Africa trade and international commerce arbitration”. They also shared their own experience on the practical research results such as legal risk prevention and control of China-Africa investment, the development of China-Africa electronic commerce and its dispute settlement and the state immunity during the treaty arbitration execution. During the process of free discussion, participants had extensive and systematical talks on the laws, regulations, economic systems, economic policies, market conditions, traffic devices and even customs and etiquettes of China-Africa investment, risk prevention and dispute settlement.
 
 

 
During the conference, African participants visited the First Intermediate Court, StarTimes, China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai African Affairs Centre and Shanghai Africa Visa Applying Centre in Beijing and Shanghai, and carried out discussions with relevant persons in charge. African participants also had tours to places of interests in Beijing and Shanghai like Great Wall, Forbidden City, Shanghai World Expo Pavilion, Yu Garden and the Bund.
